Writing an obituary

How to write an obituary

There is no perfect formula — only the person. A good obituary covers a few simple things, and then sounds like them.

An obituary usually includes:

  • Who they were — full name, age, where they lived, and when they died.
  • The shape of their life — where they were born, their work, their family, and the things they loved.
  • Who they leave behind — those who survive them, and those who went before.
  • The service — the date, time, and place, or a note that details will follow.
  • In lieu of flowers — a charity or cause, if the family would like donations directed somewhere.

Beyond the facts, write one true thing only you would know — a habit, a phrase, a kindness. That is the line people remember.
